After some time im back, i finally finished my 2110cc, im really happy with it, i need to work on some details im missing like the breather box, cause the blowby is pulling some oil out, and some problems with my Berg likage, the importat part is that it works really well.

I finally started the assembly, i didn’t take pictures of all the process, for one thing or another, i just got some from the first test, and some today looking how much i need to do to set the end play.

Crank Assembly

Today we assembled the crank, it is going to be balanced this week - i hope so - while i wait for the conecting rods and lifters to come.

Full Flow - First Part

As you know, the VW Type1 engine didnt have an oil filter from factory, so many diferent ways to put a filter where developed over the years, here i talked about the old FRAM bypass filters, cause i have one, but another method - and a better one - was created a lot of time ago, i think arround late 60’s, (they talk about this on the “How To Hotrod VW Engines” book by Bill Fisher - really good book - ), and it is called the “FullFlow” this cosist in the use of a modern fullflow filter, but to install it on the engine you need to do some work, is not that hard, ill show you how i did in the case im going to assemble my 2110.

First you will need the pieces to made the threads, you will need one for 3/8 and another for 1/4. First you will need to remove one of the plugs, the one that covers the hole you see in front coming from the oil pump (the pictures will show you), then make a nice thread in 3/8, here you will conect the filter’s outlet. Then you will need to tap the hole where the oil pump’s exit meet the case, to do that make a 1/4 thread and use a tap with alen head to fit it all the way thru the hole, the same need to be done to the oil pump body, cause you will use an special oil pump cover, so the oil will come out from the pump in this hole and go to the filter then enter the case thru the 3/8 hole.

Turagua 2007

This was the first event of 2007, it was organized by the “Comecaminos VW Club” de Caracas (Venezuela), the place they chosed was a race track called “Autodromo de Turagua”, everything was nice, the weather, the people, etc, here some pictures for you to see.

Tomorrow i’ll install the engine again, this was the first time that i assembled a head by myself, hope everything is right.

UPDATE: Is working the way it should, today i had a litle problem with one carb. but its fixed now!

Some Problems

By now i have more than a year driving my car, when we assembled the engine, we reused as many parts as we can, sometimes this is good, sometimes not, in this case it wasnt so bad, but not really good. When we sended the heads to be reconstrcted, we discovered that they had something that in spanish we call “guias sobremedida”, in english is something like bigger valve guides, cause my engine was a refurbished unit from Volkswagen, they fixed the case and the heads, in the valves guides case, they made the holes were it fits bigger, thats why the guide’s exterior diameter is bigger than stock. Here find that kind of guide is really hard, but i finally found 8 and fixed the heads. Another common fix here is, when the spark plug hole loose the threads, you make the hole bigger and then make new threads and intsert what we call “helicoide”, it is a bronze piece with a thread in the interior for the spark plug and one in the exterior that bolts to the big hole in the head. My two heads had this, but the one in the cilinder #1 was pullling the spark plug out sometimes, and it finally stoping working, so i disassembled that part and by now im triying to fing some good heads. Im going to change them, cause i have two 1300 Heads, bored to 85,5mm to work with 1600 cilinders, this heads have smaller valves, and the combustion chamber is smaller too, this make the CR (compression ratio) go up, making the engine run hotter and it doesnt work exactly how it should, i didnt know that at that time, and now i have to pay the price. Cause my engine is single port, and i want to keep it that way, i found two old single port 1500 heads that im waiting for the shop to fix the guides and put new valves on it, ill show you the new heads and the old ones when i got them here again!..

By the way, now i have some of the parts im going to use in my 2110, ill put some pictures soon!.
