The weekend was absolutely one of the most exhilarating weekends of my life. I went to two birthday parties of great childhood friends. I rode my mountain bike 48 miles for the first time in my life. And to top it off, I manage to create a great algothrim for a program I couldn't finish for a few weeks early this Sunday morning. Any other Sunday, I would have been deeply sleeping until 2:00PM. I was exhausted after all of that, so I went to bed at a reasonable time on Sunday night. This is where I'll describe my ... Read more >> |

It was a great pleasure visiting the "All Air-Cooled Gathering" in Flander, NJ today (September 17, 2006). This event was hosted by the Central Jersey Volkswagen Society and the Swim and Sports Club of Flanders, NJ. I must admit, I am often disappointed by shows that have fewer than 10 swap-meet vendors, but this was a rare moment where as I did not seem to mind. It was a pleasure taking part of an event that was slim in size, but had just about every aspect that makes a car show great. Everyone at the show ... Read more >>

Where can you find OEM VW parts at a reasonable price? Is it on an online auction or at swap meets? Unfortunately, it seems like the Internet has driven up prices across the board. I purchased my 1958 Beetle from a guy that had a 1964 Beetle beautifully restored for over 15 years. He told me that he bought his original EMPI GTV steering wheel for around 60 bux 15 years ago. Try buying one today and you are looking to spend anywhere from $400 to $600 for a decent condition GTV steering wheel. I believe that sites like Ebay ... Read more >>

By far, the simplest way to remove your old paint and primer from you VW is to have it chemically dipped. Lets call this Option #1. Unfortunately, this process proves expensive and your run-of-the-mill body shop will not have a tank to handle the dipping of your entire car. If you have the money and the means, this is by far the best way to go. Option #2 The next option is media blasting. This is safer than sand blasting and the clean-up process is easier. It is very difficult to completely clean up after sand blasting. This process ... Read more >>

This has been a long, slow project, but the results so far are more than satisfactory. I'm really taking my time to get it all done right, checking and re-checking all my measurements, torque specs and whatnot. Everything that is visible has been stripped down and refinished. The case is now high-heat flat black, the alternator and stand as well as my Kadron manifolds are a bronze metallic, other pieces are satin black. The cooling tin has all been powdercoated in silver vein.

stock heads (for now) fresh valve job

straight cut timing gears

To rat your ride or not rat your ride, that is the question. Ratting your ride should be 100% based on personality (or finances (heheehe)). If you are the hipster type in Brooklyn, San Francisco or Denver, you should definitely rat your Veedub. If you do 90% of your clothing shopping at a local Salvation Army as a personal preference, it is inevitable, your calling is to drive the rattiest ride you can find. Trust me, by following your destiny, you would hit the hipster scene quite nicely in a VW. There is ONE thing that I must clarify and ... Read more >>

It has been raining for the past few weeks in the North East (NYC). All the Volkswagen shows are getting hit hard this year by rainfall. I am planning to go out to Bug-O-rama #5 in Las Vagas at the end of the month (September 31, 2006). This will be my first mid-west VW show. I was surfing the web and ran across this craziest New Beetle I've ever saw.

I recently aquired my '63 beetle in south Texas. Shortly afterwards I moved to south Louisiana (Baton Rouge area) and really began work on this car. It was allready converted to 12v, had a 1600dp engine in it, and chromie wheels with 195/60/15's. The body was pretty rough however. The doors would hardly open and close due to excessive rust around the hinges. Large holes on the body side and the door side. There was many places where the rust had eaten away so much of the body that it really needs a donor car to be able to save ... Read more >> |
