Over the past 5+ years, this show in my recollection has been plagued with a slightly damp and/or cold weather conditions. This year, the weather could have never been more perfect. The sun was shining, but not too much harmful UV lights to scare away guys who cars are normally like vampires (garaged and covered from the harmful rays of the sun). The day was perfect for taking your VW on the road and cruising in. If you dragged your Vintage car to that show, I must say, it was really a waste of great weather.

While I am not a big fan of the “reverse side of the Englishtown parking lot” for a show (as mentioned in the past), this year it appeared all the previous congestion problems at the gate were eliminated. The people were great and the music was pumping quite nicely. I have gone to over 40 Volkswagen shows in my lifetime and I have been to the VW shows at Englishtown about 6 times total. I must say, it was not an ordinary vibe this time. I have never felt the people so closely. I realized on Sunday that people who love VW cars are really good people at heart. I even got my photo taken in a 1942 Kubelwagen. That was a once-in-a-lifetime experience although I couldn’t fit in the car completely (I omitted the photo). If you are looking for one, give this guy a call.

Here are a couple more of the photos I took at the show. The Beetle with the Radar wheels was my favorite.

I can not wait until next year!

Keep Bug’in

In a recent blog posting, I ranted about Volkswagen’s lack of new concepts. While I do still believe they need to introduce some new concepts to the market, I feel that the remake of the Rabbit has its purpose. Since the beginning, the purpose of the Beetle was to be the economical car for the masses (and word domination). I believe the release of the Rabbit has returned back to that objective. It is affordable in a time when most cars start with a base price of $30,000. The sticker price for the Rabbit is around 15k, which means that the younger generation can still drive sporty affordable cars. I can’t wait to see what they do with them at the next local VW show. I will not dive into the specs because aftermarket is king in the watercooled community anyways.

Unfortunately, but I feel OK by saying the best of show in my book was the Audi R8. If it was not in the Volkswagen family of auto makers, I might have kept it to myself. . I am saving my pennies starting from now. Hopefully I will be able to afford a completely restored R8 when I am in my old age. The car is a machine, but for that kind of gear, you have to be ready to sell your body parts to obtain.

With the plan to re-release the “Scirroco”, the release of the “New Beetle” and now up and coming is the “Rabbit”, when it comes to the past, the design of the aircooled vechicles, I’ve always thought was pure ingenius. BUT, as we enter the modern world, I believe latching on to old concept names such as “Beetle”, is a cheap advertising ploy to make cash on great concepts from long ago. I want better, with better names, with added performance, with reasonable pricing. This would make my a VW follower for the rest of my life on earth.

Here is the answer to my pondering; create at pimped out Veedub. I think the creator of this love bug had my same thoughts years ago. The only thing that I would have changed would have been sequencers along the sides of the convertible. Everything else is befitting getting out of this ride and collecting your cash from all your street employees.

Recently we have seen many vendors try to cash out on popular brands from the past. Just to name a few, the New Beetle, Mustang by Ford, the Mini Cooper and recently the Dodge Challenger. Every year that I attend an auto show, I am impressed by concept cars that never make it to the showroom. If I am not driving my vintage Beetle, I expect to see things that are new and revolutionary of its time. While I think paying respect to the Vintage Beetle by re-releasing it is great, but at some point I feel that leaving the dead behind and thinking about the living is the best approach for auto makers.

Do not get me wrong. I had crazy passions for the Scirocco in the late 80’s. I am excited about its return, but it won’t be the same. I would feel a little better if Volkswagen called it a new name. One would not feel that VW is trying to profit of past emotions. Let me change my opening statement, they are not running out of creativity, they are being creative with new designs, but are lazy at building new brands.
